MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Director General of the Bureau of State Enterprises says many State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) are characterized by mismanagement and abuse of public resources.
Mr. Arthur Massaquoi said:” Non-compliance, lack of accountability, waste, and abuse of resources across SOEs is affecting effective delivery of core public services, thereby undermining national development.”
He told the MICAT Press Briefing on Thursday, September 5, 2024, that the tackling of mismanagement, waste, and abuse requires reviewing and strengthening the current laws and regulations governing the SOEs.
Mr. Massaquoi said some heads of SOEs feel they are not accountable to the Liberian people because the existing laws do not provide sanctions for them in the event of wrongdoing.
The Bureau of State Enterprises vowed to institute robust measures to ensure transparency and accountability in the operations of SOEs to improve domestic revenue collection, which has the potential to contribute heavily to the domestic revenue of the country.
