MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has officially launched its local campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah said the launch is a testament to the Country’s seriousness and commitment to getting the seat.
Minister Piah said ascending to the non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council will elevate Liberia’s global leadership in discussing issues confronting the world.
Already, ECOWAS and the African Union including individual countries have endorsed Liberia’s bid for the seat.
Minister Piah said despite the resounding support, the Government is committed to continuously engage friendly nations for a landslide victory in June.
Liberia is the lone country in Africa competing to represent the continent on the Council.
House Speaker Richard Koon says Liberia’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council is not just about Liberia, but about amplifying Africa’s voice in global decision-making.
Speaker Koon emphasized the importance of ensuring that issues affecting Africa receive high-level attention in international governance.
Speaking at the local launch of the Country’s bid, Speaker Koon reiterated Liberia’s commitment to global stability and its willingness to take its rightful place on the global stage.
The Speaker noted that Liberia has been actively involved in combating illicit financial flows, human trafficking, and organized crimes.
Speaker Koon highlighted that as a founding member of ECOWAS, Liberia has played a crucial role in fostering regional peace and economic cooperation.
The Director General of the Foreign Service Institute at the Foreign Ministry, Reginald Goodridge, is calling on every citizen to be an ambassador of Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Mr. Goodridge, who is also the Chair of the Steering Committee for Liberia’s bid, said:” Liberia is positioned to accrue innumerable benefits, including foreign direct investment if the seat is won.”
Mr. Goodridge highlighted Liberia’s expectations and commitments if it secures a seat on the UN Security Council, including advocating for African priorities and fighting for climate change mitigation and climate security.
He added that Liberia aims to strengthen multilateralism, reinforce collective diplomacy, and showcase its leadership and diplomatic prowess to promote democratic governance and support global feminist policies.
For her part, the Senate Protemp, Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, has pledged the Liberian Senate full support to Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking at the launch of Liberia’s bid in Monrovia Monday, Protemp Lawrence Karngar-Lawrence said:” Liberia, as a post-conflict nation, is uniquely positioned to contribute to the Security Council’s work.”
She noted that Liberia’s experience from the devastation of war to the restoration of democracy and stability indicates its understanding of peace, the value of justice, and the importance of inclusive governance.
The Grand Bassa County Senator added that Liberia is determined to leverage its experience on the global stage to serve, advocate for smaller countries, and work collaboratively with member states to address the complex and evolving challenges to global peace and security.
The Senate Protemp also maintained that Liberia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council Non-Permanent Seat from 2026-2027 is a testament to its belief in the power of multilateralism and commitment to the principles of the United Nations.
