MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Acting Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Mohammed Sheriff, is opting for electricity expansion and access in Liberia at the ongoing Spring Meeting of the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., USA.
Mr. Sheriff wants the government to leverage the five strategic sub-stations constructed under the CLSG Interconnection project to boost the electricity supply in Liberia.
The LEC Boss stated that though the substations have been completed, four remain unconnected to the national grid.
He said:” The 535 Km stretch of the CLSG line in Liberia forms the backbone of the country’s transmission infrastructure, and represents a transformative opportunity to extend electricity access.”
According to a release from the LEC, Mr. Sheriff made the remarks during a meeting with representatives from the Saudi Fund.
The Acting LEC Managing Director also proposed a phased approach to grid expansion, jointly implemented by LEC and the Government of Liberia.
If implemented, the first phase would prioritize the Botota substation in Bong County, enabling connection from Bong to Zorzor and Voinjama, and eventually extending to Liberia’s underserved southeast corridor.
Meanwhile, representatives from the Saudi Fund have welcomed the proposal and expressed strong interest in supporting the initiative.
They encouraged the Ministry of Finance and the Managing Director of LEC to immediately submit a formal funding application, along with the required technical studies.
The Saudi Fund’s high-powered delegation committed to promoting inclusive electricity access across Liberia.
