by Jonathan O. Grigsby, Sr

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has instructed Internal Affairs Minister, Varney Sirleaf, to work with relevant stakeholders to restore the demolished market tables in the Waterside Market.

According to Minister Sirleaf, he will work along with authorities of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), the Liberia National Police and petty traders to rebuild the demolished tables.

Minister Sirleaf said:” President Weah is concerned about the Waterside marketers, and that the process will be done rapidly for the marketers to begin their activities.”

Recently, personnel of the Monrovia City Cooperation (MCC) destroyed market tables at the Waterside Market in Central Monrovia.

Meanwhile, marketers in the commercial hub of Waterside in Central Monrovia are to shortly benefit from the construction of a modern market building.

It followed the demolition of makeshift structures in the area on Sunday, March 29, 2020, by the MCC.

Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee said:” President George Weah is underwriting the cost of the project.”

Mayor Koijee told a news conference Monday, March 30.2020 that a team of surveyors is carrying out survey before commencing the construction project.

The City Mayor clarified that Sunday’s demolition of the market structures was intended to decongest the area and build a comfortable market building for the marketers.

Meanwhile, Major Koijee wants aggrieved marketers remain calm as Government is working to build a new market that will accommodate more marketers.

At the same time, the Head for Social Mobilization at the MCC Coronavirus Taskforce says all is now set to begin the awareness campaign Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

Culture Ambassador Julie Endee said:” Campaigners have already been deployed in the various communities to carry out the exercise.”

Ambassador Endee said other volunteers and musicians will be going into the communities to announce coronavirus safety tips.

According to her, they have mopped up targeted areas in Montserrado and Margibi Counties.

Speaking with ELBC Monday, March 30, 2020, Ambassador Julie Endee said two data centers have been established to record statistics about the awareness program, and the number of people deployed.
