MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission has been held in contempt by the Liberian Senate, and ordered to be incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The Senators are unhappy with NEC’s inability to settle all disputes arising from the December 8, 2020, Special Senatorial Elections within the stipulated time.
According to ELBC Legislative Reporter said:” The Commissioners are expected to remain under oath and reappear at the Liberian Senate next Tuesday, February 23, 2021, before being taken to the Monrovia Central Prison.
Plenary’s decision followed the appearance of NEC officials Thursday, February 18, 2021, to explain why they should not be held in contempt for violating article 83-c of the Liberian Constitution.
Article heard within 83-c, among other things, states that all complaints arising from elections should be thirty days.
The Senators argued that the ineffectiveness of NEC in hearing such cases is undermining the functions of the Liberian Senate.
