MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament is calling on member countries to take positive steps, to achieve gender parity.
Speaker Sidie Mohammed Tunis recounted the barriers women encountered for political representation in member countries.
According to him, the ECOWAS Parliament currently comprises one-hundred-fifteen parliamentarians, with only twenty-two women.
He said:” Discussion on whether or not to provide women at least fifteen seats as a baseline are ongoing, which will greatly contribute to achieving the Gender Parity Bill.”
He made the comments on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, during an interview with ECOWAS Radio in Monrovia.
