MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Acting Public Works Minister, Ruth Coker-Collins, has disclosed plans by government to rehabilitate several feeder roads around the Omega market, as alternative routes.
Minister Coker-Collins said:” This is intended to ease the traffic congestion on the main road from Red-light to the Omega market. The project will be mainly carried out around the Paynesville and Mount Barclay Communities.”
According to her, other roads have already been identified to reduce traffic congestion, in addition to the rehabilitation.
“We have identified the road leading from Mount Barclay through Johnsonville to Pipeline for People coming from Kakata, Gbarnga and other leeward parts of the Country”, she noted.
Madam Coker-Collins said that while Government is sensitive to the plight of road users and marketers, it will not allow people to sell on the shoulders of the roads.
Minister Coker-Collins said marketers currently selling on the shoulder of the main road from Red-light to Omega will be removed to avoid the huge traffic congestion.
“We are closely working with the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Paynesville City Police, to relocate people selling along the roads”, she said.
Most of the marketers who were relocated at the Omega Market are currently seen selling on the shoulders of the road, thus compounding the already huge traffic congestion in the area.
“People are complaining that there is no area to sell, but the market is empty. People are just used to being on the streets selling and we have to discourage that”, she stressed.
Meanwhile, Madam Coker-Collins said that the committee recently setup by president George Weah to oversee the cleanness of major cities in the Country will be robust in carryout its duties.
“If you are not ready, I just want you to put yourself in that position to be ready, because we are all tired of the city being dirty so we will work over night to ensure a clean city”, she maintained
She said the Committee will leave no stone unturned for the effective implementation of clean and beautiful cities in Liberia.
She said all County capitals will be targeted beginning with Monrovia and Paynesville cities.
The acting Public Works Minister is, however, calling for the total involvement of community residents for overall achievement of the President’s vision.
“We cannot do this without the total involvement of Community dwellers, so we are begging them to collaborate with us”, she pleaded.
Recently, President George Weah set up a special committee for the cleaning of all county capitols through a ninety-day plan of action, ahead of the Country’s Independence Day.
