MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Health has increased awareness and border surveillance, amid report of a new variant of the Coronavirus in South Africa.
Recently, South Africa reported a new variant of the Coronavirus known as Omicron, forcing the Country to revert to previous health measures.
Speaking at MICAT Special Press Briefing on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, Health Minister Dr.Wilhelmina Jallah said:” Health teams will carry out testing at various entry points in the Country, in order to prevent any potential spread of the virus.”
Minister Jallah said travellers from Southern Africa, as well as Germany, Czech Republic Italy and Australia will go through temporary quarantine on arrival in Liberia.
She then added that the ministry will alter and update its protocols, as the need arises.
At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr. Clement Peter, wants Liberians fully vaccinated as threat of Coronavirus new variant hangs over several African Countries.
According to a WHO report, the virus has pushed through Southern Africa, Germany, the Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, and Australia.
He also disclosed that only five percent of Africa’s population has been fully vaccinated, something he said is detrimental to the entire continent.
Dr. Peter also urged Liberians to abide by health protocols to contain the virus.
