MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia’s Solicitor General Cllr. Syrenius Cephus says the National Referendum will be held along with the December 8, 2020, Special Senatorial and By-Elections.
Cllr. Cephus said the Supreme Court has endorsed the holding of the Referendum and clarified that each of the amendment will go along with its own ballot paper.
The Solicitor General said his clarification is in reaction to widespread misinformation that the Supreme Court had halted the holding of the Referendum.
He made the clarification Monday at a press conference in Monrovia.
According to him, the Supreme Court only mandated the National Elections Commission (NEC) to conduct the Referendum in line with resolution passed by members of the National Legislature.
Cllr. Syrenius Cephus said:” The mandate from the High Court means that the publication in the official Gazette will not be followed as earlier indicated.”
Meanwhile, the Executive has begun a campaign for a “Yes” vote for all the propositions.
The five propositions include reduction in the tenures of the President from six to five years, Senator from nine to seven years and Representative from six to five years.
Others include Dual Citizenship and moving the time of voting from the rainy season to the dry season in November.
Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill declared the Executive’s support for a “Yes’ vote for the five propositions Monday at a news conference in Monrovia.
Minister McGill said the Supreme Court was misrepresented by some individuals who made the public to believe that the Referendum was halted.
He therefore stressed that the propositions are in support of good governance, and in the interest of the Country.
