Health authorities report rising wave of new variant of covid-19 in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Health authorities are urging Liberians and residents to continue to observe Covid-19 protocols as the surest way to curtail the new variant of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Speaking at MICAT regular press briefing Thursday, June 10, 2021, Health Minister, Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah attributed the third wave of the virus to the reluctance of citizens to adhere to health measures.

Dr. Jallah added that people are still living in constant denial about the existence of Covid-19 in the country.

She however cautioned Liberians and residents to continue the wearing of masks as well as following other preventive methods.

Also speaking, JFK Chief Administrator, Dr. Jerry Brown said despite the Ministry’s effort in fighting the virus, recent statistics have placed Liberia Coronavirus case at a higher rate.

Dr. Brown added that Liberia has confirmed more than 80 Coronavirus cases in the Country.

He wants the public report Coronavirus cases to ensure that the virus is prevented from spreading.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Francis Kateh wants every Liberian adhere to medical advice aimed at continuing the fight against COVID-19.

Dr. Kateh said travels cannot be restricted because doing so has a trigger down effect on the economy.

The Country’s Chief Medical Doctor Health authorities will instead put in place stringent measures that would allow travelers to adhere to safety protocols.

Dr. Kateh also disclosed that on June 9, 50 Covid-19 cases were reported in Liberia and investigation has shown that majority of the cases are individuals from the commonwealth region of the country including outgoing travelers.

He reiterated that people must avoid crowded places including entertainment centers and put in place all Covid-19 preventive protocols in the country.
