Pres. Weah commits to fighting breast cancer in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has expressed his government’s commitment to fighting against breast cancer and other diseases unique to women.

President Weah said:” As a feminist in Chief, he will personally do all he can to ensure that the disease is minimized in the country.”

He was speaking Wednesday, October 27, 2021, in Paynesville, at a breast cancer awareness exercise organized by the office of the First Lady, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender.

The “Get Pink against Breast Cancer’ awareness exercise took place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports (SKD) Complex in Paynesville.

President Weah also used the occasion to caution women to always take measures that will help prevent the disease.

For her part, First Lady Clar Weah cautioned Liberian women to be ever vigilant and proactive in fighting the disease.

 In a related development, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Kateh, is urging women to carry out frequent voluntary examination of their breasts, amid a rise in cases of breast cancer in the Country.

Dr. Kateh wants women report to hospital voluntarily, if their breasts are showing unusual signs and symptoms.

He said:” Breast cancer can be treated when diagnosed in its early stage, and medical statistics have shown that breast cancer is the number two killer of women in Liberia.”

The statement from the chief medical officer comes as hundreds of Liberian women gathered at the SKD in an ongoing awareness against breast cancer.
