Gov’t makes formal request to UNHCR for the repatriation of Liberian Refugees in Ghana

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has made a formal appeal to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist with the repatriation of former Liberian refugees from Ghana.

 The appeal was made by Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf, during a meeting UN High Commissioner for Refugees Fillipo Grandi in Geneva, Switzerland recently.

Currently there are one-thousand-five-hundred-thirty-nine former Liberian refugees residing in several parts of Ghana.

Minister Sirleaf informed the UNHCR Boss that the former Liberian refugees have expressed willingness to return home, following the decommissioning of the Buduburam Refugee Camp by Ghanaian Authorities in 2021.

He also called for the necessary support to enhance the economic livelihood of former Ivoirian refugees now integrated in Liberian communities.

The Geneva meeting was the 73rd Session of the Executive Committee of the UNHCR.
