MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Francis Kateh, says Midwives play a pivotal role in society, especially in the safe delivery of pregnant women and girls.
Dr. Kateh described the work of Midwifery as risking self-life to improve the population density of a nation.
The Chief Medical Officer is calling for support for Midwives across the Country in providing safe delivery, noting that they are one of the main components in the Health Sector.
Dr. Kateh was speaking on Friday, May 5, 2023, when he served as Orator at the ceremony marking International Midwifery Day in Monrovia.
Dr. Francis Kateh noted that the goal of reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Liberia can only be achieved through the collective support of all Midwives.
Meanwhile, the President of the Liberia Midwives Association, Wilhelmina Flomo, wants the Liberian Government to assist Midwives with logistics, technical, and healthcare delivery materials.
Madam Flomo said:” The Midwifery Division of the Ministry of Health lacks essential materials, thus hampering their work”.
She noted that dozens of Midwives across the country are finding it difficult to effectively carry out their duty, due to the lack of these materials.
The Liberia Midwives Association President believes that with the provision of necessary materials, professional Midwives will adequately perform their work to save lives.
