MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia has been elected to the category ‘A’ of the Council of International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The election was held at the 33rd Assembly Session of the Organization in London, England, following a highly contested election.

A release says the Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the IMO and meets biennially to approve decisions of the organization.

Other elected members of the Council are China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Panama, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and shall serve from 2024-2025 of the 40-Member Council.

Liberia, with 14 percent of the world’s oceangoing fleet, fits neatly in the category ‘A’ comprising countries with the largest interest in providing international shipping services.
