MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The new UN World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director has presented his Letter of Credence to the Government of Liberia.
Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah received Dr. Aliou Diongue on March 7, 2022, during which he conveyed his appreciation for WFP’s longstanding partnership with Liberia.
The ceremony was graced by Ambassador Vivien Wreh, Assistant Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Affairs, Sherdrick Jackson; Assistant Minister for Bureau of International Organization Affairs, Nyene-Yaba Freeman Thompson; and Senior Deputy Chief of Protocol, Antoinette M. Wolo.
Minister Kemayah vowed government’s commitment to being a valuable partner to the WFP, noting that the entire administration very much cherishes and values of all of its partners.
Minister Kemayah described the WFP Country Strategic Plan (CSP) as “a good strategy,” adding, “the Government of Liberia remains resolute in its commitment to work Page 2 of 2 with WFP to achieve zero hunger”.
He then recalled WFP’s long-term emergency, development, and capacity-strengthening interventions in the country: “from 1968, WFP has not only assisted this country with food, but has also been with us through our days of civil crisis, the days of Ebola and Coronavirus and during difficult and good times, you’ve always been there,” he concluded.
In response, WFP’s new Representative and Country Director reiterated his organization’s engagement to continue collaborating with the government and supporting the people of Liberia to further improve the food and nutrition security and livelihood of the population.
The WFP new Country Director vowed to support the Government of Liberia and forging towards a second-generation Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for a more integrated, guided, and aligned framework of action.
He then invited Minister Kemayah to join him on a one day field mission to get a first-hand account of consolidated impacts of WFP’s work in Liberia.
WFP’s operations in Liberia began with school feeding in 1968 and have since expanded to include emergency response, livelihoods, and agricultural assets development for rural dwellers, scaling up nutrition, and capacity strengthening.
On 27 August 2019, WFP and the Government of Liberia jointly launched WFP’s Country Strategic Plan that serves as the framework of action for WFP to support the Government of Liberia and development partners in achieving zero hunger by 2030.
