MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Chief Observer of the 2017 EU Election Observation Mission (EOM), Maria Arena has lauded the Government of Liberia for the peaceful conduct of last year’s Special Senatorial Election.
Madam Arena said her team is currently in the country to follow up on recommendations from the EU Election Observer Mission and proffer suggestions for reform ahead of the 2023 General and Presidential Elections in Liberia.
The EU Parliamentarian was speaking Monday, May 4, 2021, when she paid a courtesy call on Liberian Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, at his Capitol Hill office in Monrovia.
Ms. Arena said the 2023 elections must take into consideration the issue of women participation and called on the National Legislature to speed up the constitutional change as it relates to the election.
Responding, Minister Kemayah welcomed EOM to Liberia and appreciated Madam Arena for the kind words on the December 2020 election.
Ambassador Kemayah said the compliment from the EU Envoy only strengthens the government’s resolve to ensure that the needed improvement in the electoral system is done.
Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Liberia, Laurent Delahosse has disclosed that the EU is planning to help digitize Liberia’s elections system.
Ambassador Delahosse said the EU is providing the amount of 15 million Euros in support of the process.
He stated that giving the population of Liberia, it is easy to digitize the electoral system in the country.
Ambassador Delahosse further mentioned that conversation is currently ongoing between the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the EU on the funding of the 2023 elections.
