MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed the discovery of Marburg Virus in neighboring Guinea.
The Director of Infectious Diseases at NPHIL, Thomas Nagbe, said:” The disease is similar to Ebola, containing the same signs and symptoms, and was discovered in Guekedou, a region which borders Liberia in Foya District, Lofa County.”
Mr. Nagbe noted that the Health Ministry has heightened cross-border surveillance to quickly detect any case, and all neighboring countries are on the highest alert.
Mr. Nagbe, however, urged Liberians and foreign residents to remain vigilant in the wake of the Marburg virus epidemic in Guinea.
He said:” There is already a system in place to track any spillover of contagious virus from across Liberia’s border.”
