MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has called for mandatory security inspection of future gatherings in the Country.
It followed an apparent stampede at a crusade organized by Apostle Abraham Kromah in New Kru Town on Wednesday night, January 19, 2022.
At least twenty-nine persons, including mothers, pregnant women and children are confirmed dead, due to the incident.
Addressing reporters after visiting the Redemption Hospital, where some of the bodies are deposited, President Weah described the situation as a national tragedy.
President Weah said:” Future large gatherings must meet the security approval before such program is held.”
The Liberian Leader said:” The Government is saddened by the latest calamity that has befallen the Country, for which the necessary security measures must be taken to avoid a repeat.”
Meanwhile, a three day national mourning has been declared by President Weah, to be observed by citizens and foreign residents.
At the same time, the United States Government, through its embassy near Monrovia, has paid tribute to the Government and people of Liberia, for the death of at least twenty-nine persons at a crusade in New Kru Town.
A statement issued Thursday, January 20, 2022, said the US Embassy mourns with the people of Liberia for the victims of the January 19 incident.
The Embassy said it extends deepest condolences to the families of the innocent victims of the tragedy, and hope for a speedy recovery of those hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy has joined the Government of Liberia in the observance of three days of national mourning.
Also, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) says it is extremely saddened by the incident.
In a statement issued Thursday, January 20.2022, UNDP-Liberia extended its sincerest condolences to all the affected families.
UNDP-Liberia said while the nation mourns the great loss of lives, the incident sharply highlights the urgency requires in addressing the plight of unemployed youth and the drug abuse menace in the Country.
Its Resident Representatives, Stephen Rodriquez, in the statement said the body remains ever ready to explore and support solutions with the Government and people of Liberia.
