Justice Ministry clarifies on reported inmates deaths at Monrovia Central Prison

by Jarp Davies

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Justice has denied media reports alleging that inmates are dying at the Monrovia Central Prison.

Assistant Justice Minister for Correction, Eddie Trawally, clarified that the death being referenced in the report took place at a hospital, describing the article as inaccurate.

Speaking to ELBC on Thursday, December 15, 2022, Minister Trawally called on the Ministry of Finance to disburse critical funds to support the feeding and medication of inmates at the central prison facility.

At the same time, the Justice Ministry has embarked on a strategy to remedy the overcrowding situation at the central prison.

Early this week, the alleged refusal of the Central Prison Superintendent, Varney Lake, to jail a defendant from West Point Magisterial Court triggered a contempt charge against Superintendent, Lake due to the overcrowding of the prison.
