Liberian Senate Cites Internal Affairs Ministry Officials…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has cited officials of the Internal Affairs Ministry to provide updates on the implementation of the Local Government Act.

It followed concern from Grand Bassa County Senator, Jonathan Kaipay on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Senator Kaipay said: The Minister of Internal Affairs, Varney Sirleaf, should inform the public about the status of the Local Government Act.”

He added that knowing the Local Government Act implementation status will give the new government an insight into how to appoint Local Government officials.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are expected to appear before the Liberian Senate on Tuesday, January 10, 2024.

At the same time, the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agency and Health has been instructed to engage authorities of the Health Ministry and National Disaster Management Agency on their interventions in the recent fuel tanker explosion in Totota, Bong County.

It followed a briefing from Bong County Senator, Prince Moye, on Tuesday, December 2, 2024.

Senator Moye said:” The death toll has risen to over seventy persons, while others are still in critical condition at health facilities.”

Meanwhile, the Senate Joint Committee on Health, Autonomous Agency, and Commission has also been instructed to ensure that the Health Ministry and National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) live up to their responsibility.

The Joint Committee will inquire from the Ministry of Health and the NDMA about their interventions and what is needed to provide adequate care for the victims and families.

In a related development, the Sierra Leone Health Team is expected to arrive in the Country shortly to provide services to victims of the Totota incident.

They are coming to complement response efforts with their Liberian counterparts, amid the rising death toll from the Totota fuel tanker explosion tragedy.

National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Executive Director, Henry Williams, disclosed on Tuesday, December 2, 2024, at the end of the National Disaster Coordination Platform Meeting in Monrovia.

Director Williams told journalists that the Sierra Leone Health Workers’ collaboration is in solemn solidarity with their Liberian counterparts to contain the situation.

Mr. Henry Williams stressed the need for more assistance from local and international partners to cater to victims of the disaster.
