by Jarp Davies

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United Youth for Peace, Education, Transparency and Development in Liberia (UYPETDL), a local water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) advocacy organization, has reactivated the Legislative WASH Caucus Secretariat at the 55th Legislature.

The Legislative WASH Caucus is a platform established in 2016 by Lawmakers to promote the WASH policy agenda and ensure adequate budget support for the sector.

The group of lawmakers is also working to provide strong oversight for the improvement of WASH governance in Liberia.

The Legislative WASH Caucus membership includes both Senators and Representatives.

The Legislative WASH Caucus lost the majority of its members including the leadership during the 2023 elections after they were not re-elected by their constituencies.

In 2016, WaterAid Liberia provided funding support for the establishment of the Legislative WASH Caucus at the Legislature.

With another funding support from WaterAid Liberia, UYPETDL officially reactivated the Legislative WASH Caucus Secretariat on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

Several newly elected lawmakers have expressed interest, while others have begun signing up on a WASH pledge to join the WASH Caucus.

Recently, Montserrado County Representatives, Sekou Kanneh and Jerry Yogbor endorsed the Legislative WASH Caucus.

UYPETDL Executive Director, Timothy Kpeh, said the Legislative WASH Caucus Secretariat will provide timely updates to lawmakers to inform WASH decision-making.
